Entrepreneur’s Diary #54 “Three Times Three Letters”

The Three MMMs

A short time ago, Kornelia – a well-liked colleague of mine at InterFace – told me about a presentation she had heard and very much liked. It was about leadership – and the speaker had, among other things, told people about the three important M‘s of Management.

So far, all I had known were the three K‘s (CIC) by Dr. Baldur Kirchner:

  • Krisen (Crises)
  • Krankheiten (Illnesses)
  • Katastrophen (Catastrophes)

Dr. Kirchner studied depth psychology and was an important coach of mine. He told us that, in his opinion, people can only change with respect to things they have been conditioned to do if one of the three K‘s hits them really hard.

I am also quite familiar with the three K‘s (CCC) introduced as a requirement for athletic success by professor Dr. Alfons Madeja:

  • Konzept (Concept)
  • Kompetenz (Competence)
  • Kapital (Capital)

Prof. Dr. Alfons Madeja was a professional soccer player in his youth. He has his own consulting firm, helping sports clubs (= enterprises belonging to a special category of the entertainment industry) towards success. At one time, I had the privilege of speaking as a guest in his lecture series.

As Dr. Madeja sees it, athletic success – even though depending on many accidental things – is also something you can systematically work towards by prudent planning. The three .“K“s are a requirement, with the acquisition of capital already being part of the concept. In order to be a success, the first thing you have to have is a clear concept. And then, above all, all parties concerned have to be competent. When it comes to team sports such as soccer, basket ball, ice hockey or handball, the coach has to play a central role (like the CEO of an enterprise).

Incidentally, I see proof of Dr. Madeja‘s theory when looking at the new situation of my SpVgg Unterhaching. Now that they are again ruled by competence and have a clear concept, we did not have to wait long for the athletic success. But also the many champion titles of the TSV Unterhaching volleyball team (Generali Haching) show well enough that Dr. Madeja’s theories might not be far from the mark.

The three M‘s (CMH) of the aforementioned presentation, however, are something I had not heard of before:

  • Mut (Courage)
  • Moral (Morals)
  • Menschlichkeit (Humaneness)

Quite a few things come to mind:

Mut:
In order to have courage, you have to have confidence and trust. Courage can only work in a reasonably fear-free zone. The people’s behaviour must not be controlled by stupid fears. A healthy atmosphere of respect, however, should (and must) prevail.

Moral:
Morals are always important. But you also have to be capable of balancing values against each other and of coming up with decisions based on a moral conscience. Consequently, morals not based on ethics might turn dangerous.

Menschlichkeit:
By my definition, humaneness is the desire and the capability to listen and the willingness to show empathy.

Well, all I can say is: I rather like the three M‘s. I must ask Kornelia for the title of the presentation. Then I will introduce it here in the blog.

P.S.
Another very important abbreviation in my life is WEIB (VEIN):

W = Werte (Values)
E = Erwartungen (Expectations)
I = Interessen (Interests)
B = Bedürfnisse (Need)

It might help whenever you are looking for what caused communication problems.
