60

Invitation

I will be sixty on June, 20th this year. It may or may not be a reason to celebrate.

In any case, Barbara and I will have a big summer party on that Sunday. There is plenty of room both in our garden and our house. All guests will have enough food and drink. Since we expect many guests, many efficient helpers are already waiting for their marching orders.

I would like to invite all people who like me. Consequently, I will start now and invite all my friends either by way of mouth, through email or in writing to take a look at this article. And it will make me happy if as many of you as possible show up at our home with their partners and children.

It is nice to know and like so many people. Unfortunately, however, I do not have a database on which all my friends are listed in an orderly fashion. There are even some whom I do not know how to reach at all.

So it might easily happen that some of you will not get an invitation at all (or else overlook it in their email inboxes). If any of you who knows me well and likes me does not receive an invitation, please forgive me and simply contact me.

I will be happy to see all/any of you who donate a few hours of that Sunday to me and wish to share the 20th of June with me.

The party will start at 3 p.m. and we expect to close down around 10 p.m. Those of you who arrive in Munich earlier than 3 p.m. can, of course, make their appearance at our house earlier than that. Likewise, we will be happy to help you with organizing accommodations.

Here is one small thing I would ask you and one really big thing:

First the small thing I ask you: if you can manage without too much trouble, please let us know (if possible a week before the party) if and with how many people you will come. For Barbara, in particular, it will make matters a lot easier during the planning phase. Thanks!

Now here is the really big thing:

Please do not bring anything!

I really mean it. Owning too much is a burden. Especially so if you are turning 60. During the final phase of my life, I wish to tend towards freeing myself from material things.  Besides, I am perfectly happy – at least as far as physical wealth is concerned. That is why I ask all my guests not to bring anything personal. I am very serious about it.

Friends who find this a hard bargain are asked to spend their money on something worthy and make a generous contribution.

For example, supporting Francis Van Hoi would be something very close to my heart.  Francis left his German home of choice after 40 years for good. He wants to give some of the good things he experienced in his life back to his home country and its people.

He is now back in Vietnam, trying to help all the many children who are born with a handicap because of the Agent Orange used during the Vietnam War.

This is something I feel very strongly about. After all, when we were young during the 1960ies, we witnessed all the atrocities of the Vietnam War quite intensely, even if from afar. Our hearts were against it, but there was nothing we could do.

For more information on Francis and his Agent Orange children, see the section HELFEN in my IF blog. It is edited by Markus Seidt.

If you are not too much in favour of donating something to Vietnam, you are welcome to do some other good deed. With us, too, all is not gold that glitters.

I look forward to seeing you at the party!

P.S.
All those who cannot come on June, 20th are invited to toast me on June, 24th, after our InterFace Forum at Unterhaching, starting at 5 p.m.
