Here is the third and last article of mine on the common addiction to standardizing everything and certifying humans.
A short time ago, my “small” daughter (aged 16) proudly showed me a certificate. She earned it, along with others, last year at school. I was taken aback. Her annual report did not look very good, but to make up for it, she earned a few certificates.
I used to believe that you get taught some general knowledge at school, thus earning your “general qualification for university entrance”. And that said “qualification“ is documented by these reports. Now it seems reports are no longer good enough. Schools, too, now follow the general trend and issue certificates.
But does this make sense? Do “schools”, too, now think they can no longer ignore the speed that seems to prevail in this world? Do they want to prepare the children for their future role as experts in order to later turn them into one of those small links in the world of adults? Because, after all the cheating they started with products, they now also have to certify knowledge and competence?
Isn’t education and gaining new competence something personal and private? First and foremost, you learn and practice for yourself, don’t you? The basis is always your own interests and values. And then you look for experienced teachers who take you by your hand and make it possible for you to learn even more. In order to then look upon your own competence and experience self-consciously and critically, instead of looking at a collection of certificates.
Equipped with your own competence, you can enter the market. Not as a “small functioning executing system”, but as a human being who delights in his or her work. And this is also the only way to further develop your own personality step by step. Without fear of the future.
