My Favourite Play: Our Little Town – by Thornton Wilder

kleinestadtOur little town – unsere kleine Stadt. A beautiful play.

I once read in a dictionary of theatre that no other author ever managed to describe in such a unique and yet simple way on the stage what it means to live and be human.

My first contact with this play was when I was 16. The drama group of the Jacob-Fugger-Gymnasium played it. A few actors were still missing, but due to my poor articulation, all I got was a minor role: that of the newspaper boy in Act One.

During the performance, the audience was in tears. When I read it several years later, I, too, had to cry. There is an (abbreviated) German version that is also quite nice.

Now I hope that the play will soon re-appear on stage around here. I will certainly go and see it.

But if any of you finds the play (no matter if in English or German): do read it. Or listen to the CD. It is worth the effort and the world becomes a smaller place while you are at it.
