Late Roman Decadence

Today, as I ride my bike through Corsica through scenery that might well be mistaken for the Wild West, 20 Quads suddenly come from the opposite direction. They are a pack.

ll male drivers and one female driver wear masks. They are extremely noisy and their vehicles are extremely smelly. All of them seem to enjoy themselves enormously.

On seeing this, my brains associated it with “Late Roman Decadence”. I do not claim to know what it means, but the term seemed to suit.

Isn’t that strange?

Not long ago, a German minister used the term. He probably did not mean Quad drivers.
Or is it only about Panem et circenses?

On the other hand, I can easily imagine that Quad drivers are more likely to vote Liberal than Green or Leftist. After all, driving a Quad has the flavour of freedom about it, hasn’t it? Or are the Quad drivers more those who vote Young Conservative? Well, Quad drivers probably do not think about Late Roman Decadence one way or the other.

Something is wrong. But someone who rides his bike is by definition someone who fails to understand many things on this world. That is just how it is.

Regardless: there is an attractive sound to the term “Roman Decadence”. I rather like it.
