Economic Refugees.

On Sundays, I always enjoy listening to the Sonntagsbeilage by Michael Skasa on the radio program “Bayern 2”. It is originally broadcast after the 10 o’clock morning news and replayed at 5 p.m. Consequently, I manage to listen in quite frequently.

Last Sunday, it was about “abroad”. Naturally, that was a treat for my “polyglot heart”.

I found the program about “economic refugees” particularly interesting. In the program, three letters of persons who had emigrated were read aloud (Christian Höning – Luchterhand – Amerika ist ein freies Land). It is a current topic. Yet the letters were 200 years old – and the economic refugees were all from Germany.

Well, it all reminded me of my article on measures for discouraging refugees (Flüchtlingsbekämpfung). I still fail to understand why economic misery should be considered such an evil motive for emigrating.

200 years ago, the refugees came from a poor and hungry Europe. Today, a prosperous EU discourages economic refugees from Africa and other countries. And we incarcerate refugees in camps like the on the island of Lampedusa – before using them for harvesting, for instance when we need cheap labour for picking peaches.

I already look forward to today’s “Sonntagsbeilage“.
