CREDO

The IF Blog article by Chris caused a passionate debate. Consequently, I now find it appropriate to write down what I believe in. It is quite simple:

I believe that life has meaning and that therefore my life, too, has meaning. To be sure, I do not know what the meaning of my life is. What is more, I also believe I will never in my life find out as an objective fact. If at all, the only possibility is as a subjective perception.

For me, it is also plausible that there is a concept underlying all the things we experience. But here, too, I believe we humans will never be able to completely understand this concept.

Other people call what I experience as meaning and concept GOD. This is fine by me, because I can easily imagine God as a word for something that cannot be described.

The sacred books of mankind developed over hundreds and thousands of years. Like many stories involving humans, they contain prudent and wise information. For instance, according to wikipedia, the  ten commandments (Zehn Gebote) start by forbidding images of God as originally written in the Hebraic bible.

I find this swell, because it is in total agreement with my refusal to form an image of – even attribute certain characteristics to – something higher like God. At this stage in life, I refuse to think about things that I know I never have a chance to understand. For instance about a rationally deducible meaning of (my) life or a rational explanation of where the concept we all perceive might come from. And, above all, I do not wish to have an argument with anybody about these kinds of things.

In a nutshell: I think I know nothing but I believe it all makes some kind of sense.

Well, it is quite simple, isn’t it? But as it is, I can only speak for myself.
