My Soft Boiled Breakfast Egg

Once in a while, I like to indulge in a soft boiled egg for breakfast. Since my weekday breakfast at home is always a bit on the “Italian” side, I particularly enjoy my soft boiled egg when I travel. These days, however I find it hard to get them.

During my boat trip on the MS EUROPA, the soft boiled eggs disappeared from the breakfast buffet as soon as we were in US waters. Well, I know that the Americans are a little crazy when it comes to food. And I also understand that the “most beautiful yacht of the world” from Hamburg (driving under a Nassau flag) does not want to risk being banned from all US harbours.

But during the last few months, I spent several nights in hotels both in Germany and Austria. And whenever I was looking for a soft boiled egg in the morning, all the signs read “eggs – hard boiled”.

Once I actually asked if I could have a soft boiled egg. One of the friendly service persons told me that they were no longer allowed to serve soft boiled eggs.

Somehow or other, I find that hard to believe. If, however, the disappearance of soft boiled eggs is really another consequence of some obscure EU regulation, then I, too, start believing that the progressing EU-ization is no good at all.
