brand eins in November – The Focus is on Thinking

001_b1_11-09_NEU_09/06 Titel 03I never found next month’s Brandeins in my letter box this early: the November edition arrived here on October, 22nd! Regardless of the fact that October is one of the few months in the second half of the year with 31 days to it …

The cellophane cover was really heavy, which was due to six brochures with advertisements! As a matter of principle, I am not in favour of advertising brochures. I accept them because I know they mean “that funny stuff”, which is what every enterprise needs.

The title of the front page is:

Knowledge is the first raw material that gets more as you apply it!

When I had finished both work and my twitter contributions (usercode: RolandDuerre – please read) at 11 p.m., I spent some time browsing through the new Brandeins (which is why I am really tired today).

Due to the Brandeins being rather voluminous (180 pages in all), I could not read all of it in one go. But I still found quite a few extraordinary articles in there. Again, the focal point issue is outstanding: Thinking. It is about KNOW-IT-ALL, TALENT SHOWCASE, THE EXCEPTIONATE LADY, to name only a few. I learned that our brains do not do any thinking, why holy cows must be slaughtered and that we will go back into the future. And now I also know: “THINKING IS BAD”. Isn’t that exciting?

Some minor details came as a surprise. For instance, in the article “HALF THE RENT”, you come across the term “lamp”. We computer scientists know that it means Open Source Quartett Linux, Apache, MySQL and Pearl/PHP. Well, that is exactly what it says in the magazine. Chapeau for such knowledge in an economical journal.

As always, I found the world of numbers cute. I read that the Pirate Party finished with two per cent of the votes at the last Federal Elections. Remember that the Green Party, when they first entered the election race in 1980, only had 1.5%. Three years later, they were represented in our parliament, and 18 years later, they were part of the Federal Government. Does that tell us anything in these days when, due to the internet, everything moves faster, anyway?

On page 129, I found something special. It was some self-advertising! According to Brandeins, only 5% of all Germans know Brandeins. Now that is something they want to change, which is why they are looking for an agency. What a pity that InterFace is an IT enterprise, rather than a PR agency. Otherwise I would immediately apply.

As it is, I help to make Brandeins a little more popular through my blog. Just because I think it is a good thing!
